Petal Cove Color Pallete

I have been asked on several occasions about what colors I have to choose from, so I created this color palette for my shop. Of course, these are not the only colors I have- I can custom mix all kinds of shades, but this is a great example of the wide range of colors available, and the most common ones I use. My current favorites are hot pink, shimmery gold and jet black. How about you?

Earrings for Sensitive Ears

Growing up I have always had very sensitive skin. I was always frustrated with the limited selection of earrings for people with metal allergies- and even the earrings I did buy that said they were for sensitive ears always ended up giving me rashes anyway. I stopped wearing earrings altogether, as even gold and sterling silver would cause reactions.

Recently I discovered the joys of titanium, a nickle free metal that is very gentle, even on sensitive skin! Allergic reactions to titanium are possible, but they are rare. Isn't that exciting!?!

Now off to create more special earrings for all the sensitive ears out there!

P.S. Check out the very first pair of titanium earrings in my shop:

Jewelry for a Good Cause

I was contacted by LJR Arts Academy to see if I would be willing to help with their fundraising efforts. They are a non-profit organization that offers free art classes after school for middle and high school students! As passionate as I am about art, education and non-profits, I was so happy that they had contacted me! I am very excited to be able to contribute something for a program that is so important.

With all the budget cuts, the art programs are the first to go from our schools. Having worked with the school district for so many years, I appreciate the need for what LJR does! I will be creating two lots for their holiday fundraising raffle. I will post pictures of the unique pieces when they're complete. I sense this is the first of many opportunities for me to use my jewelry for a good cause. How awesome is that!?!?

When I was going to the University of Riverside, California, I dabbled in entomology. I have always had a love for insects and bugs and all kinds of creepy crawlies (except for crickets... something about them creep me out). I resold most of my textbooks, but I could not bring myself to part with the book from that class. I still have it and I use it for inspiration when my creativity needs a boost!

I whipped the book out the other day and was completely inspired by the butterfly section. I ended up making a monarch cane, which proved to be very versatile!

Hectic Halloween Weekend

This is my three-year-old son, Matthew. He is the absolute light of my life, and the funniest and sweetest little dude ever! He makes the silliest faces! They crack me up! Thank goodness for digital cameras (he broke mine, by the way, and I finally got a replacement today) to capture his silly antics!

The poor little guy got the nastiest tummy flu during the Halloween weekend, it was terrible but mercifully only lasted a couple of days. We both got very little sleep, it was pretty miserable.

He jumped back to his normal self right before Halloween, in a sort of Dr. Jekyll/Ms. Hyde kinda way. It's like one minute he was barely moving and pale as a ghost (how very appropriate for Halloween), and the next he was running around singing the theme song for the Backyardigans at the top of his lungs (which, by the way, is his current favorite song).

Being a single mom with a sick baby makes it very hard to get anything done, and it set me back a little bit. Of course, I don't mind (too much) because in the end, my son is my priority and his health is the most important thing. But still, errands and chores and work can pile up pretty quickly.

I'm finally catching up on everything, and somehow managed to pull off an amazing event this last week, thanks to the help of my awesome friend, Sean.

Now it's a new calm before the holiday storm. I've finally caught up on sleep and I am feeling very inspired!

Petal Cove's First Pair of Hair Sticks!!!

I had been meaning to create a pair of hair sticks for some time, but the last time I attempted it, I got a little frustrated and put it on hold. I was in an experimental mood the other day, so decided to give it another shot, and I'm pretty stoked on how they came out! Just in time for the Day of the Dead, also!

The flowers were made from the same cane I created for the translucent leaves necklace in my shop!

I sculpted and painted each skull by hand and the sticks are decorated with gold leaf. I must say, they are pretty unusual... just the way I like it!

Day of the Dead Riverside!!

Petal Cove is proud to be a vendor at the Dia de los Muertos event in historic downtown Riverside on November 2nd from 6-9! Admission is free and last year was soooo much fun!

Come check it out, and be sure to stop by my booth! Also, I highly recommend getting there pretty early. Last year it got really crowded, really fast, and getting a good parking spot was already a challenge when 6 pm rolled around.

You can look forward to amazing dance performances, all sorts of amazing altars and art, and if you're into people watching there will be plenty of people in the craziest Day of the Dead ensembles roaming around with their faces painted like sugar skulls.

The event is hosted by Division 9 Gallery, which is an amazing place! If you're ever in the Riverside area you should definitely check them out.

In preparation for this fantastic event, I have been working on some very special pieces. I'll be posting some new bad boys soon. Hope to see you there!

It's Finished!!!

I am so pleased with my latest project, and here is a picture as promised. I'm so excited for Autumn, and this is my own personal little ode! I will be listing it in my etsy shop shortly (, I must admit I'm a little reluctant to let this one go! I have a few other very new lovelies that are just about ready as well, and I am very pleased with the results!

Newest Project

Sometimes I find inspiration in unexpected places. Today I found it in the Sunday Newspaper! Sipping a hot coffee, browsing the various ads and coupons, I came across this photo from Joann's weekly flyer:

Check out that sunflower in the middle of the centerpiece! I took one look at that, dropped my coffee and bolted to my studio. I knew instantly I wanted to create a piece with some unusual texture and rich earth tones, using that sunflower as my inspiration.

I am still working on my sunflower. Here is a quick pic from my cellphone to give you an idea of it so far (the battery on my real camera died). I'll post up some better pictures as soon as I'm finished with this:

I'm thinking necklace or brooch. What do you think?

If you have an Etsy shop, and are familiar with Etsy shop stats, you'll know you can click there and find out where your views are coming from. I love to check this feature out every once in a while, as I am often pleasantly surprised! This happened yesterday!

It said I had views coming from Pinterest. Pinterest? I hadn't heard of it, but I checked it out and I love it! It's basically a virtual pin-board where you can pin and share all the things that interest you, and it is filled with amazing eye candy!

To see that some sweet gals had taken the time to pin my shop, and also special items from my shop was a huge compliment! I am so flattered! Some of my items were posted in craft ideas, and I am thrilled that my items are inspiring people to get crafty!

If you haven't been to Pinterest, check it out! And while you're there, stop by and browse the gorgeous pin-board collections by a gal named Heather Grus, such as this one where she featured some of my jewelry:

Petal Cove Jewelry Featured in Concrete Minerals Photo Shoot

My long time friend Emily, owner of Concrete Minerals (an amazing line of mineral make-up), asked to use my line of Petal Cove jewelry in her latest photo shoot! How exciting is that?

Her new richly pigmented colors were these amazing shades of green and hot pink, and I was so inspired that I created some pieces especially for the shoot, including:

This insane green floral statement necklace:

I had created what was intended to be a green leopard cane, and ended up deciding it looked more reptilian. I once read a quote from an artist, unfortunately I don't remember her name, about those of us working with clay know not to get too attached to our pieces because the clay always seems to have a mind of its own. Well, that was certainly true in this case. I kind of had to just let the clay take the lead, and ended up with a whole collection of reptilian print statement pieces, some of which are not even up in my etsy shop yet, including this scaly cuff bracelet:

The texture on this piece is amazing, I layered each slice carefully and finished it off with an acrylic sealant for a glossy look.

Anyway, the photo shoot was a big success! Dash, the photographer from King's Media Photography, did an amazing job, very professional. I can't wait to see all of the finished photos.

Emily has been kind enough to give a sneak peek of one of the photos which featured the gorgeous model, Buggy Nova (who is also a professional wrestler!!!), throwing her fist in your face sporting the custom double finger ring I created for the shoot:
